Medical Insurance for Pets
Is medical insurance worth the cost for your
pet?
MetPet.com Staff Writer
Medical insurance has been available in
Europe for years and some companies are beginning to offer it in the US.
Some corporations are even offering pet insurance as a benefit to their
employees.
Is it worth it? The policies are fairly expensive and they have fairly
low limits on how much they will pay out per procedure/treatment and per
incident. They are worth considering but it's important to know what the
limitations are.
Many of the advanced medical procedures available to humans are available to
pets. These include hip replacements, cataract surgery,
organ transplant and cancer
treatment. As the number and types of advanced procedures and drugs increases, so
does the cost.
For the average healthy young pet who is not prone to accidents and is
generally not out and about in difficult or hostile areas where he could be
hurt, pet insurance is generally a hit and miss proposition. It may be
just as cost effective to set aside a few hundred dollars a year for treatment
in case of serious accident or illness rather than pay it out for insurance.
The best thing to do is shop around, ask lots of questions, call your vet, talk
to friends and make an informed decision.
