The West Highland White Terrier is closely
related to a number of Scottish terriers developed during the 1800s.
Terriers of this type were designed to dig and follow prey into their
burrows. They are small, short-legged, tough dogs with strong teeth and
jaws. The West Highland White Terrier is generally credited to Colonel
Edward Donald Malcolm of Poltalloch, Argyll,
Scotland. The distinctively
bright white terrier was easily visible when hunting and unlikely to be
mistaken for its prey. It was originally called the Poltalloch Terrier.
The West Highland White Terrier is strong
for its size, determined, somewhat stubborn and demanding. It is an
excellent companion being affectionate, small and energetic. The West
Highland White Terrier can be food, property and person possessive. They
can be difficult around very small children. The West Highland White
Terrier can be dangerous to small animals and owners should take care when
introducing them to other household pets. |
