How To Cuddle Your Cat
Cats are soft and plush but are also highly
sensitive
MetPet.com Staff Writer
Cats can be friendly
and even extremely affectionate toward humans if they are socialized early with
positive experiences.
Socialization consists of being picked up, snuggled and gently petted by people
from the earliest date the mother cat will allow. Most experts think
that the critical imprinting period for kittens is prior to 7 weeks and it may
be even earlier.
If your cat is standoffish or doesn't like
being picked up, take advantage of the chill (literally) in the air.
During cool evenings or during the winter, keep the heat turned down
and pick up Fluffy every chance you get. Just cuddle her for a few seconds and then
set her down again before she can object.
Some cats are so sensitive to touch that more than a few seconds
of petting or holding can make them turn around and claw you to get away.
When you're unsure of your reception, always err on the side of caution and save
yourself from scratches. There's no need to hurry!
Cats naturally seek warmth and she'll
eventually get the idea that people are great heaters. In particular, the
bare skin of your neck, arms and hands is especially warm and you may find your
cat trying to snuggle up underneath your chin. If you don't want to inhale
a ton of cat hair, give him a bare arm to lean up against. It's the first
step in creating your own loving lap-sitter.
