Bat&Swat toys are non-interactive. That is, there isn't usually a person on the other end of it. These include balls, catnip filled toys and lots of strange plastic thing-a-ma-jigs and thing-a-ma-bobs. If your cat isn't an eater of odd things (this is sometimes due to illness but is often a behavioral problem) then having a large number of bat & swat toys around is great. Since each cat is an individual, you may have to try a number of toys before you find the ones he'll play with. Also, he may play with something one day and then refuse to look at it for weeks thereafter. With all bat & swat toys, try showing your cat what it's used for. Juggle it, toss it, crinkle it, flick it, etc. in front of him. This will help differentiate a cat toy from a non cat toy. That is, that handmade curtain tassel is NOT a cat toy but this little ball IS. Otherwise, everything on or near the floor may be fair game for future cat play! Cats generally like things that are lightweight, shiny, make delicate noises and are easy to push around. They also need variety so it's best to rotate toys several times a week. You can put the unused toys in an inaccessible closest or drawer. Even the best toys wear out with use so toss them away when they become dirty or damaged in any way. Bat & swat toys are made to supplement your interactive toy selection but won't take their place entirely. All cats need a few minutes a day of interactive play. The rest of the day they'll just watch what you're doing for entertainment. |
