Hearing in DogsMetPet.com Staff Writer Dogs can hear sounds that are beyond our upper range. As youngsters, we can hear sounds up to 30K cycles per second. By the time we are seniors, that has decreased to around 10K. For most of our life we are hearing sounds below 20K cycles. Dogs can hear around 40K (possibly 100K if recent studies are true) which means they pick up high-pitched sounds we ignore. When he stops and growls in mid-stride during a late night walk, do you think your dog has seen a ghost? Maybe what he's reacting to is the high-pitched squeak of mice in the bushes. Or maybe ghosts have high-pitched voices!
