Contact DermatitisMetPet.com Staff WriterThis irritation of the skin can look similar to an allergic reaction but is localized to the area of contact. It is caused by an irritating substance such as harsh soaps, plant fluids, pesticides, flea products or other chemicals that get on your dog's skin. The irritation is usually worst where there is less hair since the hair offers some protection. If you notice something on your dog, remove the bulk of it with a paper towel or plastic bag and then wash the dog. Not only can noxious substances cause irritation, your dog may ingest it and get sick. Usually eliminating the substance is sufficient for the skin to heal. If not, your veterinarian may prescribe medication.
