Reasons to Walk Your Dog

It's great for you and great for your dog

MetPet.com Staff Writer

We think that 15 minutes 4 times/day walking the dog is one of the best ways to beat disease, premature aging and general flabbiness. At minimum, once in the morning, twice during the day and once at night happily coincides with Rover's internal schedule.

1. The Journal of the AMA and the Harvard School of Public Health wrote that 15 million Americans have Type II, or Adult Onset Diabetes.  It is likely brought on by obesity, diet and lack of exercise.   There is no cure so prevention is crucial.

Exercise helps use blood sugar more efficiently and you can cut your risk of diabetes in half with 1 hour of brisk walking a day.  The faster you walk, the better the effect. That hour can be spread throughout the day any way you like.

2. You can reduce your risk of breast cancer by up to 20% by exercising.

3.  You and your dog can maintain a healthy cardiovascular system with at least 30 minutes of daily exercise.

4. Daily exercise can improve your outlook on life by increasing the level of serotonin available to your brain. This is especially critical in the winter when people are more susceptible to seasonal depression.

5. Vigorous exercise can break up a stressful day making you more effective at whatever you want to do.

6. If you can't or don't wish to walk through your neighborhood, you can walk at many public places or through someone else's neighborhood.  Even if you're limited to walking inside the house, you can go up and down the stairs vigorously with Rover in tow.
